Shadow of Ambition

He had walked away from a long, successful career to do something that actually mattered to him. Six months later, he was exhausted. The question I keep seeing in leaders who left the race: what am I still trying to prove?

He had everything he said he wanted.

Time. Financial freedom. Work he found meaningful. No boss. No deadlines.

He had walked away from a long, successful career. Deliberately. On his own terms. To do something that actually mattered to him.

Six months later, he was exhausted. And quietly confused about why.

In our session I asked what was driving the pace.

He thought about it for a long time.

Then: 'I think I need to win at this too. I don't know how to just do something without needing to be the best at it.'

We sat with that.

Then I asked: 'What does being the best buy you right now, that you don't already have?'

A longer silence.

'Proof that I still matter.'

That was the real thing.

Not a scheduling problem. Not a health problem. Not even a boundary problem. An identity problem.

For decades, his worth had been measured, ranked, and validated by the system around him. He had left the system. The system hadn't left him. He had simply rebuilt it inside himself.

Here is what I keep seeing across the leaders I work with, whether they are mid-career, at the peak, or stepping into a new chapter.

The neural wiring of 20 or 30 years in high-performance environments doesn't retire when you do.

The drive to compare. The need to be seen as excellent. The discomfort of stillness.

These aren't weaknesses. They were the engine. For a long time.

But at some point, the same engine that took you somewhere begins to take you in circles.

The question worth sitting with isn't 'how do I do more?'

It's: what am I still trying to prove? And to whom?

If that question lands, the discovery call is where we can sit with it together.
